Create, run and change routines

Coffee-ready room settings on the web

In an existing or new routine, add or open the step that switches a coffee machine on. That step now shows When the coffee is ready beneath it.

1. On the web, choose When the coffee is ready. The default announces in the machine's assigned room.
2. Choose announcement rooms and select one or more rooms with speakers in the current home.
3. Select Save.Save

When the routine runs automatically, it announces when the machine reaches temperature. If you press Run now by hand, the system sends a phone notification instead. Quiet hours still apply separately in each selected room. If there is no assigned default room, or the announcement cannot be delivered, the phone receives the ready notification.

Create a routine

Choose Routines. On the web, use New routine or a template's Use this. On the phone, open the routine editor from Routines. Give the routine a clear name and check that it is for the correct home.

The editor is organized as When, Only if and Do. When can include a spoken phrase, schedule, sunrise or sunset, someone coming or going, or Motion detected from a camera that reports it. Only if can include time range, days, daylight or darkness, and home presence. Both times apply to a time range, or neither applies. Sunrise and sunset use the home's saved location and timezone. A presence condition needs a real presence source, not an assumption that the phone's location is always available.

In Do, select the actual device, room or whole house and its supported action. Other offered actions include Play music on Sonos, Say something, Wait, Notify and Run a routine. Set action order deliberately, because a later failure does not mean earlier actions were undone.

Run and inspect a routine

On the web, Run now deliberately runs regardless of the routine's conditions, so review what it does before pressing it. The enable switch controls automatic triggers; switching it off does not remove manual Run now.

On the phone, a pinned routine opens on a tap and runs on a deliberate hold. Read its last result and details instead of assuming requested means completed.

Edit, disable, or remove a routine

Open the routine's edit action, change its fields, and save the changes. Use the separate Remove/Delete confirmation to remove it.

Configuration can be restricted by a partner. Local describes eligible steps, not a promise the hub has received and can execute them, so not every routine will work without internet.
